Pre-conference on research related to Nordic journalism education

The NordJour Conference for Nordic journalism teachers will organize a one-day online pre-conference focusing on research on journalism education and pedagogical issues of journalism. The pre-conference is directed to teachers with an ambition to conduct research, and to researchers with an interest in journalism education in the Nordic context. The pre-conference will be hold on 28th September 2022 at 9:15–15:00 (Scandinavian time) on Zoom. The working language of the pre-conference is English.

Call for abstracts

The NordJour pre-conference accepts presentations with preferences on the following topics yet not limited to these:

• The sociological structures of journalism education
• Professional identities of journalism educators
• Interaction of research and education within journalism education
• Curriculum design in journalism education
• Instructional design of courses and online courses
• Distance education and e-learning
• Technologies of journalism education
• Student perspectives
• Perspectives from the journalism industry on journalism education
• Best practices and case studies of journalism education

The topic should entail a Nordic aspect, i.e. deal with journalism and journalism education in the Nordic countries (Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway, and Sweden, including Faroe Islands, Greenland, and Åland Islands ) or have a strong relevance for the Nordic countries and their journalism education. Comparisons between the Nordic countries are warmly welcome. In addition, the topics proposed should clearly deal with journalism education and/or present a pedagogical approach to journalism instead of discussing journalism or journalistic practice in more general, as at conferences in journalism studies.

Please send a 250-word abstract by 10th August to maarit.jaakkola@tuni.fi. Include a brief description of the presenter (max. 100 words) in the submission. Presenters will be notified of acceptance by the 20th August. The pre-conference will be hold on Zoom and all accepted presenters will be sent a link. Update: Educators with research interest are invited to express their interest by 16th September in e-mail to maarit.jaakkola@tuni.fi. No abstract is needed. The pre-conference will employ dialogical and collaborative methods to discuss and explore emerging or potential research ideas.

The pre-conference is based on presentations only, no full papers are needed. However, there is a possibility to continue on selected topics to put together a special issue to a journal or a monograph. Therefore, especially those who are considering to conduct research on journalism education and related issues are highly encouraged to participate in the pre-conference. A strong emphasis is put on discussions, and the pre-conference thus works as a platform for both researchers and educators to discover a pedagogical angle on research or find a research angle on educational issues.

The pre-conference is organized by the Nordic collaboration committee for journalism education which is a network the major journalism schools in the Nordic countries. It has 22 member institutions at the moment.
