DILEMMA GAME

All videos have English subtitles. You can turn them on in every video under ‘Preferences’ -> ‘Subtitles’

A digital discussion game about harassment, bullying and unwanted sexual attention in the media industry

The purpose of the dilemma game is to focus on one’s own and others’ boundaries among future interns on their way into the media industry. Where do your boundaries go? How can you act if you are being harrassed? How are you a good friend on the sideline?

The goal of the dilemma game is to detaboo harassment, bullying or abuse. No one should be ashamed of having been exposed to something unacceptable, and the purpose of the game is to increase participants’ awareness of when they should react and how they can act.

In October 2020, the national research centre Kvinfo in collaboration with the Danish School of Media and Journalism and the University of Southern Denmark studied the extent and nature of sexual harassment and violations committed against interns in the Danish media and communication industry.

The study showed that 16% of respondents had been subjected to sexual harassment at their place of internship.
Divided by gender, 20% of women answered that they had been subjected to sexual harassment, while this was the case for 7% of the men surveyed.

It is, of course, completely unacceptable that so many interns experience abusive behavior from colleagues or bosses while in internships.

We can all agree that the solution to this problem is for bullies, harassers or offenders to stop their abusive behavior. The dilemma game is not an attempt to place the responsibility on the offended person.

The purpose of the dilemma game is to increase future interns’ knowledge of their own and others’ boundaries and focus on the possibilities for help that exist if you experience something unpleasant in your workplace.

It is important to point out that when you play the dilemma game, there are no wrong answers. There is no one right answer to what is best to do in each situation.

Enjoy the dilemma game.

What do we know about sexism and abuse on the job?

Mai Rasmussen, who is a journalist and head of press and communications at Kvinfo, gives a summary of the structures and reasons why interns in the media industry may be exposed to unpleasant experiences at their workplace.

What options do you have if you have experienced something unpleasant?

Tom Hansen is a psychologist and work environment and welfare consultant with the Danish Journalists’ Association. He explains what formal options you have for getting help, advice or guidance if you have experienced something unpleasant at your place of internship.
